e temple where prayers for healing eye diseases are answered. It is said that Kobo Daishi founded this temple in 807. At the beginning of the Heian period, after Kukai learned esoteric Buddhism over in the Tang Dynasty of China, his ship was caught in a storm on the way back to Japan. He threw the Tocco into the sky from the top of the ship. The Tocco disappeared into the sky with a trail of smoke. After returning home, Kobo asked Kasuga Shrine’s God, “Where is my Tocco?” The God told him that the Tocco was on the north peak of the Uchimura Shoyama of Tamba Province Saeki, resting on the branch of a pine tree.
